Prompt #10

Choose one of the core subject areas examined in Chapters 7 – 10 of Technology Applications for the Digital Classroom.  List the chapter # you are reviewing and then discuss how you would integrate some of the online resources identified in the chapter for teaching that particular core subject area in a P-12 classroom.

I believe that it is important to use technology in math courses. Most students have difficulties with math and it is important for them to understand the math concepts. I would give my students multiple sites they can use outside of the classroom for homework, review, or when more assistance is needed. Smart Boards is my favorite type of in-class technology for math courses. I would use them quite often because it is a way for all my students to be more involved in the lesson. It is also a great way for my students to participate in class. Other students may be visual learners and because of that I would use Teacher Tube videos. This will give my students a different perspective of the math concept. As a teacher I would use real life situations so that my students would understand the math concept and be able to apply it. Technology can not replace a teacher but it can be a great help and useful learning tool.

Prompt #9

Select another of the “Point/Counterpoint: Critical Issues in Technology,” in Chapter 6 of Technology Applications for the Digital Classroom.  List the issue # you are reviewing and then identify which position you believe is most accurate/valid, and explain why.
I agree with the yes side of this argument. Facebook is just another way of connecting with people is it not? And as the writer argues, as teachers are we not trying to make connections with students everyday? People who think that it is crossing legal or personal lines should rethink their position. This is a digital age and Facebook is one of the most powerful programs that the world has ever seen. As long as teachers or other adults use the Facebook connections professionally, then I do not see any problem with allowing students to request friendship to teachers.

Prompt #8

Select one of the “Point/Counterpoint: Critical Issues in Technology,” in Chapter 6 of Technology Applications for the Digital Classroom.  List the issue # you are reviewing and then identify which position you believe is most accurate/valid, and explain why.

Issue #16- Digital Textbooks.

I think we should move into digital textbooks within the school system. Especially since there are many students who are not interested in reading a textbook. A digital textbook can provide sufficient up-to-date information for the lessons being taught. It is so much easier to update information digitally than in a textbook. For how fast life is changing technologically  and historically, a textbook it outdated at most every five years. There can be video clips added throughout the text book that children can look at to get a better understanding. Everything is right there and kids cannot have an excuse that they did not have it. In addition, all the textbooks that students have to carry carry to and from school everyday can cause horrible back problems. Many children are getting back problems at the 4th grade. It will be easier for students who are learning foreign languages. Students can learn the language from a native person instead of a teacher who has a horrible accent and says all the words incorrectly. Digital textbooks have the information within the CD. There is nothing else the student or teacher needs other than that textbook.

Prompt #7

Review the new Web 3.0 technology identified in Chapter 5 of Technology Applications for the Digital Classroom and discuss which technologies you believe, in accordance with the Gretzky Principle, we should be skating toward in American K-12 classrooms, and explain why.

I think we should be skating toward all of the technologies. Each technology is geared toward a different outcome. They are teaching students how to become successful in creative ways. Students are playing games and learning at the same time. The Gretzky Principle are suppose to relate to your students and accommodate your classroom and the use of technology for them and not because it is easier for you.  Using current technology that engages students into the classroom, they are more likely to remember and focus on their school work. One of the examples that I thought were the most interesting and useful were the iPhone apps that were created to help students review test materials.

Prompt #6

Review the technology timeline in Chapter 3 of Technology Applications for the Digital Classroom and discuss how you have witnessed the evolution of technology integration in society and in the classroom during your lifetime – from the when you were a student in elementary school to present.

Technology has progressed a lot since I was in middle school six years ago. My school had two computer labs and laptops that could be rented for the class that the whole school shared. Today I know that my high school has given everyone an IPad to use for his or her classes. Also I was not allowed to have my cellphone out during school. It had to be put away and shut off in my locker. I personally didn’t even have a cellphone in middle school. Today I have seen that schools have become more lenient with cellphones and allow them to be use during school just not in the classroom. Because technology is so prevalent in our society, it is hard to keep it out of the classroom.

Prompt #5

Review the ISTE Standards for Teachers outlined in Chapter 3 of Technology Applications for the Digital Classroom and discuss how you plan to integrate technology in your classroom in order to enhance the teaching and learning process and achieve the five educational standards identified by ISTE for teachers.

I would get my student more engaged in learning by using technology daily especially because that is what catches their attention the most. I would allow them to make a weebly account  to use blogs and forum posting for online discussions once a week so that students can see what their classmates are writing and respond to them.  I would also use a site like Quizlet and this improves a student study habits. There are now many apps like this that you can incorporate in a classroom.

Prompt #4

Review the ISTE Standards for Students outlined in Chapter 3 of Technology Applications for the Digital Classroom of and describe how you can apply the current use/role technology plays in the day-to-day life of students (to include social networking) in your classroom to help achieve the six educational standards identified by ISTE for students.

Technology in the classroom will help students create, communicate, share ideas, and publish things on the internet for evaluation.. With computers in a classroom, or the easy access of a tablet/ smart phone I will be able to let students do online research on a topic so that they might get valuable and reliable sources to use for projects, papers, etc. Doing this will also teach them how to identify good and bad sources so that they get the best available information. (i.e Wikipedia is unreliable vs a website that ends in .org)  I would design a lesson that uses a virtual program, eBook, or a website that we can communicate and interact on the actually website.
